On Tuesday 19th March The Eastwood Academy travelled to SHSG( Southend High School for Girls) for the Borough netball tournament with a mini bus full of excited girls, yr 7s full of nerves & yr 8 with high hopes of success.
The yr 8 team started their journey against St. Bernard’s A team, despite having many shots at goal & most of the court play they found themselves 2 – 0 down at half time. This was the first test of determination for the Eastwood team & they battled back in the 2nd half to win 4 – 2.
The next match was Eastwood v SHSG A team, which many believed would go on to win the tournament. However, the year 8s had other ideas. This was a very tight match & the game was level at ½ time. The SHSG team started to worry & Eastwood took full advantage by not missing a shot at goal. Mrs Pearce, the coach for Eastwood, was shouting & biting her nails with nerves as they went 1 goal up with 1min left on the clock. The last minute seemed like an hour but Eastwood held on & became the 1st Eastwood side to beat SHSG A.
The 3rd match of the afternoon saw Eastwood against a very good Belfairs team. This was again a very tight match with the teams matching each other goal for goal. The score was level with 1 min to go but Belfairs scored & there was no time left to reply. After the high of winning against SHSG the girls now had a tough job to get through to the Cup competition.
There was a long wait before the last group game match, Eastwood v WHSG A team started. As soon as the whistle went the Eastwood girls were in the zone & raced to a 2 goal lead, they continued to play well & WHSG were frustrated & could not make a comeback. Eastwood won 7 – 4.
Eastwood won their group, which was another first for the school & were through to the Cup competition where they were to play St. Bernard’s B & SHSG B Teams respectfully. They played excellently against St. Bernard’s & won 11 – 1.
Unfortunately they were slow to start against SHSG B & the team raced into a 3 goal lead. Eastwood fought back but it was too late & SHSG B Team won the game 5 – 4. Everyone was nervous waiting for the final results to be declared. The points from the group stages were carried through & added to the 2 final games.
Mrs Pearce, the Eastwood coach said ‘This was a fantastic competition, which unfortunately didn’t go our way this year. Well done for your excellent achievement & brilliant play. Player of the tournament was a very close call with everyone playing well but the final vote goes to Eloise for her excellent shooting & movement around the court. Most improved player of the year goes to Lucy who has developed her defending skills & confidence throughout the year. GOOD LUCK next year girls.’
